Window Shopping – Post Rakkasah West 2016

Just a few short weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending Rakkasah West 2016.  One of the ensembles I spotted, and absolutely fell in love with, were the costumes worn by troupe Neshee Dolu.  This troupe is directed by my friend Sara Shrapnell, belly dance instructor and my co-author for the upcoming “Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage.”   What I fell in love with is how simple and elegant these ensembles look on a wide variety of body types.  Since I know her troupe will be wearing different costumes next year, I think I may have to pick up one of these ensembles for myself.  If you find this ensemble appealing for yourself, or your troupe, scroll blow this image for click-through links to the Dahlal website.

Costumer’s Notes Magazine Moves to a New Home

Hello Gang!

Just a little bit of news today.  We have moved the 2013 special edition of Davina’s Costumer’s Notes to the Issuu.com platform.  This is a great place for finding, reading, and sharing magazines and great features allowing folks to flip through magazines and enjoy the visual content.  Issuu now also offers a print option, and we made the choice to move from our old hosting service because it offers more versatility and more options to print in color or black/white, in two sizes, and either as a book or a magazine.  I want to help my readers get the best value possible!   But really, it’s just so pretty to look at and easy to read on the Issuu site, I had to move it.

It is my hope that you will enjoy this magazine and come back for future projects that I will be sharing via the Issuu site in the coming months!

Thank you so very much for your continued support and readership. Enjoy!

Micellar Waters – Gentle Cleansing Technology from France

Micellar Waters - Facial Cleansers and Makeup Removers| www.davina.usDeveloped in France, but sweeping the globe, micellar water is a soap-free skin cleanser and makeup remover you simply wipe on, and then wipe away with no rinsing.  This product is pronounced variously as “Mice-Ler” or “My Celler,” but properly as “Me-sell-air,” (you earn extra style bonus points if you can add a lovely French accent.) Originally, this was a cleansing product designed for Parisian women who live with very hard, mineralized water.  Parisian water is so hard, it makes it difficult to rinse away dirt and makeup and to really feel clean.  It can also be quite harsh and irritating to the skin.

Micellar water is a 90’s era technology based on an ancient and proven makeup removing technique, using oil for skin cleansing. In a nut-shell, Micelles are tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in softened water. When you apply micellar water to the face, the micelles bond with the dirt, lifting makeup and oil from the skin. The water rinses as you go, leaving your skin smooth and clean. Micellar waters are free of soaps, detergents, and alcohol, making them quite gentle even for the most sensitive skin types.

The international cult favorite brand is Bioderma from France. But fortunately for us, micellar water is now available from companies worldwide and at nearly every price point.  However, not all brands perform the same, so be prepared to test drive a few and shop around for the perfect balance of performance and price.

Benefits of using a Micellar Water

  • Travel – So, this is a killer product to travel with.  You can cleanse your face anywhere.  You don’t need to rinse the product off, so no sink is needed.  This makes it perfect for “Glamping” out in the wilderness or for keeping your skin clean on a long-haul flight.
  • Quick Changes – Doing a photoshoot and need a variety of looks?  You can use micellar water to very quickly wipe off your makeup without leaving residue that will interfere with your next makeup application.
  • Combating Sensitivity – I have super sensitive eyes.  Practically every makeup remover burns and makes them watery, red, and irritated.  I have found that using micellar water to remove the bulk of my eye makeup reduces irritation and, frankly, stinging pain.

Downsides to Micellar Water

  • Best for normal, combo, and dry skins.  Oily skinned users may not find it as effective as a traditional makeup remover.
  • Not always effective against water proof makeup.  I personally use the bi-phase Garnier micellar water that includes silicone and is more effective against the waterproof makeup I wear for performance.
  • Not all formulations are the same.  If you are having so-so results trying out micellar water, you might want to switch to another brand or formulation.  Every skin is different, so what works for your best buddy, may not work perfectly for you.
  • Product may leave a film.  Because the micelles are oil, products with more micelles held in suspension will sometimes leave a slightly oily film to the skin.  While dryer complected people might enjoy this result, normal to oily skin types might find the need to rinse with water or even do a second cleanse with a more traditional product.

Using Micellar Water

    • Saturate a disposable cotton pad, cotton ball, or cotton bud.
    • For eye makeup removal – hold the saturated pad against your eyes for a  with a gentle press.  Gently wipe the makeup away.
    • For face cleaning, use the saturated pads like a wipe to cleanse all the skin.
    • Repeat if needed, especially if you’re tackling stage makeup.

5 Amazing Beauty Products from Theatrical Makeup Companies

I’m the first person to admit that I’m not a makeup artist.  That said, my initial introduction to professional quality makeup was via the world of theater.  While I was studying technical theater and learning the craft of costume design and construction back in the ’90’s at UCSD, I was required to take classes in theatrical makeup techniques.  I learned a few tricks and techniques that have stuck with me through the many years of my dance career.  Stage makeup needs to be vibrant, highly pigmented, full coverage, and probably most importantly, hold up to vigorous activity, heat, and perspiration.

Here are a few of my old favorites and new finds from the world of theater that might just help you discover a new gem to add to your makeup kit.

05047_00_prod_EF 85Kryolan – TV Paint Stick

This is one of my all-time favorite products.  In my career as a dancer, I’ve used several of these completely up. When I know that I’m going to seriously sweat, say, outdoor performances in the California summer heat, I grab this wonderful product.  The stick format dabs on easily and you can use a sponge, brush, or even your fingers to blend this full-coverage foundation into the skin.

Tip: If you are keen on highlighting, and don’t mind doing some on-the-spot mixing, get a white stick and create your own high-light shades!   Find it here

RCMA-No ColorRCMA –  No Color Powder

RCMA is a fantastic powder for setting makeup looks without adding any additional color.  This finely milled, silky smooth powder is perfect to use for setting without imparting any color.  It contains no pigment, no fillers, and best of all, doesn’t reflect back in photography.

Tip: If you are going to use the RCMA No Color Powder to bake your face, put a liberal quantity into your baking zones and let sit a minimum of 5 minutes.  When you go back in to brush the excess powder away, be sure to dip your brush into a bit of powder first to get the ultimate smooth finish.  Find it here

107097000__57378.1432943058.600.600Ben Nye Glitter Glue

If you need it to stick this is the product to use!  I have sensitive skin, and this doesn’t irritate me.  It’s great for doing over-the-top stage makeup and I’ve used it to mount individual sequins, small rhinestones, bindies, feathers, glitter (of course,) and once I used it to glue feathers onto my face. Be sure to moisturize after using, as it can leave your skin looking dry.  If you need to glue something to your face, well, look no further than this affordable glue.

Tip:  This is an excellent product for reviving a favorite bindi or for wear with custom bindis that don’t have their own sticky surface pre-applied.  As a woman without pierced ears, I’ve sometimes used this product to glue rhinestones onto my earlobes to simulate earrings.  If you must don a navel jewel, then you might want to choose this great glitter glue.  Find it hereViseart-Cool Matte

Viseart Eyeshadow

These eye shadows are highly pigmented and super blendable.  Although the rarified price of $80 per palette is out of most ordinary mortals budget, if you can swing one of these sets, it will last you for many years.  Ounce per ounce, this product is no more expensive than most department store brands, but the individual pans are quite large. I enjoy using the Cool Matte Palette 07as to produce some really deeply colored looks that don’t crease or move even through performances.

Tip: In 2015, this brand took over the YouTube beauty community by storm.  If you find this product interesting, do a quick YouTube search for tutorials and reviews to see what other people have done with these incredible eye shadows.  One example is beauty vlogger Emily Noel  –  Find it here

greenmarble_spray_black_480_largeGreen Marble Fixative

Your makeup will NOT move if you invest in this theatrical makeup setting spray.  This product is a lot more expensive than drugstore brands, but if you are prone to glowing, or dare I say, sweating, this is the product to try. Because this product is strong, I recommend that you buy the smallest size product to give it a test run to ensure it doesn’t trigger any skin irritation or allergic reactions.

Tip:  Back in the day, we would use hairspray to hold our makeup in place.  It would create a waterproof barrier with bullet proof hold, but hairspray is horrible for the environment and not great for the skin. Find it here

2015 Highlights – Year in Review

2016-1-28-Dawn-Headset-BWFor me, December is a season full of holidays for other people.  Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule and others are all very important for my friends and loved ones.  But in my little corner of the universe, New Years is the most important celebration of the season.  It’s time to reflect on the past year and make plans for the next. I usually spend the entire month of January processing all my thoughts about what came before, and then gearing up for the next 11 months of production, relaxation, and everything in between.   2015 was an amazing year, with such tremendous highlights and wonderful achievements so I thought I would take a moment and thank you for joining me on this adventure and to share my personal triumphs.

Th61HupZBUVPL._SX394_BO1,204,203,200_e Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut – Finished and Released

Although the official release date was October 18, 2014, we actually continued to work on edits through February 2015.  That book was such a labour of love, that culminated an arc of more than 20 years of intensive and passionate research into this exquisite book.  If you love the assiut cloth as much as I do, I hope that you will enjoy checking out my book. Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut – Available on Amazon.com  or right here on my store.

All About Assiut – Workshops and Interviews

In August I was interviewed by Mahin of Daily Belly Dance Quickies, who came through town on her California Dreaming tour.  We hung out over a weekend filled with workshops, performances, and an informal dance party.

I was super excited to take my show on the road and presented workshops and lectures about Assiut throughout California.  My favorite was when I took my slide show up to the De Young museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  I teamed up with vintage assiut collector and dealer, Nancy Hernandez to present

Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage

In early 2015, I embarked on a group project with author Sara Shrapnel of Teaching Belly Dance, my good friend and long time collaborator, photographer Alisha Westerfeld, and international dance sensation Poppy Maya.  The four of us are working on a new book entitled, Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage.  Photo Below: Second Cover Proof

Cover_Design_2015 WEB

This is a stagecraft handbook for dancers who are ready to share their dance technique with the world through public performances.  In this book, we take the reader step-by-step through the process of preparing to be entertaining.  At 402 pages, this is the biggest writing project I’ve ever worked on before, but it’s very exciting.

Last summer, when we were in the text editing phase of the book process, we took time out from our busy schedules to meet with the glamorous Mahin for an interview about the book.

I’m Dancing Again

One of the most exciting things for me was that I have returned to dance after recovering from back and shoulder injuries. The “dance sins” of my youth have caught up with me in the form of repetitive motion injuries. My knees are shot from over use, I had a two-year battle with a frozen shoulder, and the ligaments that hold my SI joints have simply worn out.  Aging is hard, but the alternative is much worse!

Instead of giving up, I’m working on strength building, position modifications, and building a different dance vocabulary composed of gentle movement that will not stress my joints.  Part of being a venerable dancer is learning to accept body changes that are the result of having once pushed myself to the limits. I have also learned to really listen. When my body feels discomfort, or downright pain, I just have to stop.  Gone are the days of “pushing through.”  I’m planning on dancing to the end of days. This means listening, adapting, learning new gentler methods, and becoming a better dancer through a conscious editing and and construction of my skills.

Wanderlust

In 2915, my wanderlust created in me a desire to take to the seas. In 2015 I took two cruises, or rather, I took the same cruise twice. Since those trips, I’m now a convert to the cruising lifestyle. Moving forward with my life, I’m ready to set sail with an hours notice.  Way back in 1998, My first cruise was a belly dance intensive, with Aisha Ali and Fahtiem as headliners.  What a great trip that was!  I vividly remember the classes we took in a country themed two-step bar on a Princess ship.  I don’t even remember the name of the boat, much less the night club, but it was one of the best experiences of my life. So if you hear about any belly dance cruises, please-please put me on that mailing list!  Photo:  Bay of Cabo San Lucus, March, 2016

I’m looking forward to revealing some of my upcoming plans for 2016 and beyond in future posts, and I’ll be starting a series of new “Book Reports” on the progress of the new book, Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage.

Thanks for letting me take a moment of self-indulgent reflection on the past year.  I appreciate you joining me on this journey!
